The Ultimate Guide to Posting and Promoting Your Blog {Free Checklist and Resources Guide}

You have thought of a great blog idea, you have it all typed up on your website ready to go, now what??

Before you hit publish there are a few things you need to do, don’t cringe, it won’t take you long but it will ensure you have a professional and polished blog that gets read!

Before you read any further make sure you have grabbed a copy of my Ultimate Blog Checklist – you will find a handy guide to all the things you need for your blog as well as a whole page of resources that I have collated to help you along the way. You can grab your copy here

Now to get down to the blog:

  1. Proofread it – you are looking for not only spelling and grammar but also that it makes sense. Sometimes it can be tricky to do this with your own writing so I always use Natural Reader for this (you can find the link in my guide). Once you have proofread it and are happy make sure you look at a preview of your blog and check the links all work.
  2. Formatting – while you are looking at your preview cast an eye over the formatting. Is it easy to read and follow? Does it include sections and formatting that help your readers see the main points? For more tips on formatting your blog check out my post here
  3. Photos – make sure that whatever photos you use look good. I am a fan of free stock images though when I can use something that is more unique I will. If you have your own photos that’s even better. But whichever way you go make sure they are sized correctly and located in a good spot.
  4. Guest blog considerations – if your blog is for someone else’s website make sure you have included an up to date bio and a professional headshot as well as any website and social media links that you are able to include
  5. Branding – check your colours and fonts are in line with your website and nothing has gone askew
  6. Length – check the length is right. You want a blog that has valuable information for your reader but you also need to remember you are not writing a novel and if your post is too long your reader will give up half way through

Once you have your blog ready and you have hit publish remember to not leave it there hoping people will find it. When you are ready to share it consider:

  • Facebook groups: where can you share it? And I don’t just mean which groups will let you, I mean where will it add value, where will it resonate with the audience and most importantly where are you already part of the community and not just dropping a link and running?
  • Social media pages: by all means get it up on your pages but don’t forget to also get it scheduled for the future as well. I have all my blogs going to facebook, linkedin and twitter on a rotating schedule so they each get some air time about every 6 months or so (more frequently for twitter as it moves so fast).
  • Your email list: send it out either as a one off email or as part of your regular newsletter. These subscribers already see value in what you do so give them the opportunity to see more of you.
  • Colleagues and Networks: think about whether you have any colleagues or networks that may find your blog valuable and ask them to share it. It’s important to only do this when you think a particular person will find the blog valuable not every time and to every one.
  • Businesses you mentioned: did you give someone a shout out in your blog? There is nothing better than being unexpectedly mentioned positively in a blog so let people know when you do it.

Making sure your valuable content gets the best opportunity to be seen by your audience and others who will find it useful is the best way to increase it’s exposure and make the time you spent on it worthwhile. You thought it was good enough to put it out there to the world so make sure it looks great and gets read.
